Manufacturing Keyword Research That Leads to RFQs

Step 1: mine your own RFQ and quote history

Pull the last 6-12 months of RFQs, quote requests, and even sales call notes. Extract every mention of:

  • Process (CNC turning, laser cutting, MIG welding, injection molding)
  • Material (6061-T6 aluminum, 17-4 PH stainless, Delrin, Inconel)
  • Part type (bracket, manifold, housing, gear, fastener)
  • Application/industry (aerospace, medical device, food processing, automotive Tier 2)
  • Certification requirement (AS9100D, ISO 13485, ITAR registered, IATF 16949)
  • Tolerance or dimension language when it's distinctive ("±.0005 inch," "12-foot brake capacity")

This gives you a raw list of the actual vocabulary buyers use, which is usually more accurate than anything a keyword tool surfaces for a narrow industrial niche.

Step 2: build combinations, not single terms

A single word like "machining" is not a keyword strategy. Combine the categories above into search-string patterns:

Group these by which capability page they should live on. A single page shouldn't try to own every pattern; split by process or by industry vertical if the volume of distinct combinations justifies it.

Step 3: check what's already indexed

Use Search Console's Performance report to see which of these combinations already generate impressions for your site, even at low positions. A term with impressions but no clicks or poor position usually means the content exists but is thin or poorly structured, not that the term needs a whole new page. A term with zero impressions likely has no dedicated content addressing it at all.

Step 4: prioritize by frequency and gap

Score each combination on two axes: how often it shows up in your real RFQ history, and whether you currently have a page that addresses it well. Start with high-frequency, high-gap combinations first.

  1. High frequency, no page: build a new capability page.
  2. High frequency, weak page: expand and restructure the existing page.
  3. Low frequency, no page: batch into a supporting blog post rather than a standalone page.
  4. Low frequency, existing page: leave alone.

Step 5: map pages into a cluster
